Rihanna Featured on April 2011 US Vogue

As reported in our January 15, 2011 post, we mentioned Rihanna will be the 3rd black female artist (following Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce) to be featured on the cover of US Vogue magazine.

She is set to be featured on the April 2011 issue. This is definitely another milestone for the Bajan Queen! She is known not only for her music but her STYLE. Her style alone is notoriously recognized within the industry!

The following is an excerpt from her Vogue cover story:

Rihanna has become nothing less than a fashion It girl. Bloggers and editors go crazy over her looks, whether it’s the fuchsia cropped sweater she paired with tangerine pedal-pushers in London or the Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo with wildly exaggerated shoulders she chose to wear to the Met Costume Institute gala. “She’s very inspiring,” says Haenn. “She has a very strong idea of what she wants. And there is always some sort of, for lack of a better word, cool factor. But because of her confidence, it never looks like a costume—it seems effortless.” Rihanna figured out that style mattered to her early on.
“When I was fourteen and f
irst started going out, I always wanted to be the opposite of everyone else,” she says. “So I would go to the club in a polo T-shirt and pants and sneakers and a hat on backward, just so I would not be dressed like other girls. And I got desperate for things that weren’t available in Barbados. I would cut things out of magazines. I was obsessed with creating a visual with clothing, and the way things are combined.” How does she think about fashion now? “It’s become more about taking a risk. When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work. I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that’s a little off, but I have to figure it out. I have to make it me. I think that’s the thrill in fashion.”

Über Talk: Ne-yo Hearts Tuesdays

Singing, producing, acting, and now creating his own cartoon... what can't this guy do. So, Ne-yo is expanding his brand and is currently in the works to creating his own deal with Cartoon Network. The show is called "I heart Tuesdays" and was created for his sister. "The forthcoming series is about "a 16-year-old girl that inherits the curse of her bloodline and she's forced to save the world from the unknown evil every Tuesday for the rest of her life," stated Ne-yo in a recent interview. No word when the show is actually set to premiere.

But wait there's more! Not only is the singer creating his own cartoon, but there are talks for him to make his own hat line along with his own fragrance. Ne-yo tells the AP, "It's odd that the hat is more popular than the music? And possibly a fragrance, but I don't know what I smell like, so I don't know if I want people to smell like me. I mean, I know I don't stink. But everything is in conversation right now."

This would be a smart move since everytime we see him he's wearing an uber fab hat. In the meantime you can catch Ne-yo in his new flick Battle: Los Angeles.

Über Talk: National Women's Hall of Fame

Earlier this month the 2011 inductees for the National Women's Hall of Fame were announced. Among the eleven inductees was jazz singer Billie Holiday and civil rights activist Coretta Scott King. The inductees will not be formally inducted until September 30th and October 1, 2011 in Seneca Falls, New York. Take a look below for a quick mini bio of the two via the National Women's Hall of Fame website:

Billie Holiday (1915 – 1959)Considered by many to be one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time, Billie Holiday forever changed the genres of jazz and pop with her unique style. Holiday began her career as a singer in Harlem nightclubs in 1931, without formal musical training. She went on to record and tour with a number of famous musicians like Benny Goodman and Lester Young, and officially began recording under her own name in 1936. Holiday, known for her deeply moving and personal vocals, remains a popular musical legend more than fifty years after her death.

Coretta Scott King (1927 – 2006)One of the most celebrated champions of human and civil rights, Coretta Scott King, in partnership with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ignited democracy movements worldwide. For over forty years, King traveled extensively as a messenger of peace, justice and social action. Notably, in 1974, she formed and co-chaired the National Committee for Full Employment, formed the Coalition of Conscience (1983), and co-convened the Soviet-American Women’s Summit (1990). In 1969, she became the founding president, chair and chief executive officer of The King Center, the first institution built in memory of an African American leader. As a lifelong advocate for non-violence and coalition building, King’s legacy will continue to serve as an example for years to come.

Über Talk: Nelson Mandela Foundation to Launch Clothing Line: 46664

The following is an excerpt from the Associated Press:

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Preppy meets philanthropy in a new international clothing line being launched by Nelson Mandela's foundation.

The 46664 Apparel line, named after Mandela's inmate number at Robben Island Prison, features colorful clothing that is supposed to make wearers look good on the outside — and feel good inside.

Profits from Mandela's project will help sustain the foundation's charitable gifts, while boosting South Africa's troubled textile and clothing industry, officials said at a news conference at the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Wednesday.

With the launch, the foundation joins a small but growing club of socially conscious sartorialists, such as Edun, a line founded by Bono and his wife in an effort to bring a steady, sustainable manufacturing industry to Africa.

The 46664 line features brightly colored men's sportswear and intricately patterned, African-influenced women's wear, all designed by Seardel, South Africa's biggest textile and clothing manufacturer.

Mandela was the 466th prisoner at Robben Island, a wind-swept penal colony in the Atlantic off Cape Town, in 1964. The anti-apartheid icon spent 27 years in prisons for fighting white rule. He became South Africa's first black president in 1994, winning office in all-race elections that spelled the end of apartheid.

I love fashion with a CAUSE! This new clothing line has much potential to be VERY successful!

Über Talk: "Ink, Not Mink" Waka Flocka For PETA

The "No Hands" rapper is wearing No Clothes for the latest PETA Campaign. He among many celebrities such as, Mario, Taraji Henson, and Gilbert Arenas have stripped down in the support of animal rights.

To be honest this is quite interesting and left field to find Waka Flocka participating in such a campaign who knew he was such an animal lover?

In a recent interview he proclaimed his love for them stating:
"I love animals...as a kid, I had dogs, fish, iguanas, lizards. I don't want nobody to skin my puppy."

I have to admit I'd rather ink not mink too! Its cheaper, animal friendly, and can be meaningful.

Below are the ad campaigns featuring Mario, Taraji Henson, and Gilbert Arenas.

[Its funny how all these campaigns are springing up during all the fashion weeks]
